Working through the Walter P Taylor Boys and Girls Club and The Change Center, the first Restitution Sunday had about 65 kids in attendance plus families. Thanks to generous donations from the Indivisible community and beyond, we were able to give out school supplies, backpacks, free back to school haircuts by former mayoral candidate Michael Andrews, and Italian Ices from Waterice n’ Thangz. There was face painting, interactive games (water balloon fight!), two different craft tables, and we had contests with prizes all centered around John Lewis. League of Women Voters was onsite to inspire and sign people up to vote, and Theotis Robinson Jr. had everyone circle around the patio for an uplifting and empowering talk on the historical importance of Lewis and #GoodTrouble. One day they will look back and say they met a piece of East Tennessee history today.
One of the middle schoolers was just in awe of what he learned, and every time I saw him the rest of the day he would excitedly quote back John Lewis facts.
We spent the day planting seeds… and teaching the next generation about good trouble.
All school supplies remaining will go to the Boys and Girls Club & The Change Center. Remaining funds wil go to BattleField Farm & Gardens.
Thank you to EVERYONE who donated or contributed their time to make this day happen, with a special shout out to Denzel Grant, Chris Battle, and Michael Andrews for all of their valuable advice and prep work. Everything about this pilot event was AMAZING, and we hope to see everyone next time!
